Define alter-globalization

Alter-globalization (also known as alternative globalization or alter-mundialization) is a social movement that supports global cooperation and interaction, but fundamentally opposes what it describes as the negative effects of neoliberal economic globalization.

In essence, alter-globalists believe that while global interconnectedness can be beneficial, the current dominant form of globalization, often driven by international institutions (like the WTO, World Bank, and IMF) and multinational corporations, prioritizes profit maximization and free market principles at the expense of human values, social justice, environmental sustainability, and local communities.

Key aspects of alter-globalization include:

 * Critique of Neoliberalism: It challenges the deregulation, privatization, and reduction of government spending often associated with neoliberal policies, arguing that these lead to increased inequality, exploitation, and environmental degradation.

 * Emphasis on Human Values: Proponents advocate for a globalization that prioritizes human rights, workers' rights, economic equality, fair trade, and environmental protection.

 * Advocacy for Local and Democratic Solutions: It often promotes grassroots activism, community empowerment, and more democratic governance in global affairs, in contrast to top-down approaches.

 * Diverse Aims: The movement encompasses a wide range of actors and issues, including labor rights, environmental protection, anti-poverty efforts, indigenous rights, and cultural diversity.

 * Seeking Alternatives: Rather than being "anti-globalization" in the sense of opposing all global interaction, alter-globalization seeks to create alternative forms of globalization that are more inclusive, just, and sustainable. This is why the term "alter-" (meaning "other" or "alternative") is used.

The alter-globalization movement emerged prominently in the late 1990s as a response to perceived negative consequences of economic globalization, often characterized by protests at major international summits and the rise of forums like the World Social Forum.
