Article 14 of the Indian Constitution is one of the most important provisions under the Fundamental Rights. It states that "The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India." This means that every individual, whether a citizen or a foreigner, is entitled to be treated equally in the eyes of the law. The principle of "equality before law" implies that no one is above the law and all are equally subject to the ordinary law of the land. The phrase "equal protection of the laws" ensures that similar people are treated alike and no discrimination is made on arbitrary grounds. However, Article 14 also permits reasonable classification, meaning that the State can make special provisions for different groups if the classification is based on an intelligible differentia and has a rational relation to the objective sought. भारतीय संविधान का अनुच्छेद 14 मौलिक अधिकारों में से एक महत्वपूर्ण प्रावधान है। इसमें कहा गया है कि "राज्य भारत के क्षेत्र में किसी भी व्यक्ति को कानून के समक्ष समानता या कानूनों के समान संरक्षण से वंचित नहीं करेगा।" इसका अर्थ है कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति, चाहे वह नागरिक हो या विदेशी, कानून की नजर में समान है। "कानून के समक्ष समानता" का तात्पर्य है कि कोई भी व्यक्ति कानून से ऊपर नहीं है और सभी सामान्य कानून के अधीन हैं। वहीं, "कानूनों का समान संरक्षण" यह सुनिश्चित करता है कि समान परिस्थितियों वाले व्यक्तियों के साथ समान व्यवहार किया जाए और मनमाने आधार पर भेदभाव न हो। हालांकि, अनुच्छेद 14 युक्तिसंगत वर्गीकरण की अनुमति भी देता है, अर्थात राज्य विशेष समूहों के लिए विशेष प्रावधान कर सकता है यदि वह वर्गीकरण स्पष्ट अंतर (intelligible differentia) पर आधारित हो और उसका उद्देश्य तार्किक हो। उदाहरण के लिए, महिलाओं, बच्चों या कमजोर वर्गों के लिए विशेष कानून अनुच्छेद 14 के अंतर्गत वैध हैं। इस प्रकार, यह अनुच्छेद भारतीय लोकतंत्र में समानता और न्याय की नींव को स्थापित करता है।
